Maconie had no formal training in the trade before beginning the journey of designing her own footwear collections, aside from playing in her mother’s extensive shoe closet. Her mom had tons of shoes and costume jewelry, which sparked Maconie’s interest in shoe design. Although she had experience in working with the design, development and manufacturing processes at Tomasz Starzewski and Whistles, she had a young spirit that wanted to get out of the corporate structure of working in retail.
She wanted to be passionate about something, so in 2009, Kat Maconie launched her shoe brand at the age of 24 — talk about determination and desire. She was always aware of news and global changes and how they affect the supply chain, which was a significant contribution to her quick success.
Driven by versatile and bold styles, the Kat Maconie collection started as a modest line of ballerina flats. But today, the brand has expanded to include sandals, heels and boots. Each has several recognizable features, such as modern textural combinations, exciting silhouettes and bold adornments. Maconie always envisioned creating daring and vibrant shoes, decorated with over-the-top metallic details and prints — opposite of simple black shoes.
Maconie strives to include architectural movements in her creations that may not fit the comfort zone for all women, but she does well catering to the ones who know what they like and are confident in their style. She creates footwear collections that are forward-thinking, bold and playful, full of signature hardware details and sharp prints. She also mixes graphic silhouettes with creative color combinations to deliver smart and feminine designs.
The British designer harnesses the mood of London, where the brand is headquartered, and translates it into imaginative and hyper fashion pieces. Found in more than 280 stores across the globe, Kat Maconie flats, sandals, heels and pumps come from anywhere she can find inspiration. From architecture, hardware stores and old Las Vegas to tribal art and antique markets, the brand’s footwear focuses on a fresh and detailed approach.
